Pop star Ed Sheeran treated fans to an impromptu performance at the Oktoberfest in Frankfurt – wearing lederhosen and holding a stein of German beer.

The 31-year-old surprised drinkers at the annual event by unpacking his guitar and taking to the stage to sing two of his hit songs and some covers for the crowd. Sheeran, who was wearing a green checked shirt and felt hat, had been playing a concert to 60,000 fans at the nearby Deutsche Bank Park then popped into the festival for an encore.

The singer performed his song, Perfect and the Backstreet Boys hit, Everybody, among others. Organisers said Sheeran had been invited to the event but his performance hadn’t been planned and he had been trying to keep a low profile. But it wasn’t long before fans, many of whom were wearing traditional German costume, recognised him and took pictures and videos on their phones.

A video on the official Frankfurter Oktoberfest Instagram account shows him singing, Perfect, whilst encouraging people to sip down their drinks. Sheeran played three concerts in Frankfurt to end the European leg of his Mathematics tour.
